Databases

International Legume Database and Information System (ILDIS)

ILDIS is an international project which aims to document and catalogue the world’s legume species diversity in a readily accessible form. Research groups in many countries participate co-operatively to pool information in the ILDIS World Database of Legumes, which is used to provide a worldwide information service through publications, electronic access and enquiry services.

W3TROPICOS

TROPICOS is the nomenclatural and specimen database of the Missouri Botanical Garden.

International Plant Name Index

A vast searchable database that provides basic bibliographic and nomenclatural information for taxa (both accepted names and synonyms) listed in the Australian Plant Names Index (APNI), The Grey Card Index (GC) and Index Kewensis (IK).

Legume (Fabaceae) Fruits and Seeds by J. Kirkbride Jr., C.R. Gunn, A.L. Weitzman & M.J. Dallwitz

An identification key to genera for seeds and fruits of the legume family. The coverage is world wide, and for each genus there are descriptions of the seeds and fruits, distribution data, and images. The interactive software system INTKEY is used for accessing the data and images. The key can be used for identifying to genus unknown legume samples or for querying the data and images for legume genera, and is designed for seed analysts, technicians, port inspectors, weed scientists, ecologists, botanists, and researchers who need to identify isolated legume fruits and seeds.

Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture

GRIN is one of the most up-to-date sources of plant nomenclature for vascular plants of agricultural importance available on the Internet. It is a searchable database that provides the structure and nomenclature for the accessions of the National Plant Germplasm System and includes information on about 37,000 taxa representing 14,000 genera (many Leguminosae are included).

Australia’s Virtual Herbarium (AVH)

The AVH is an on-line botanical information resource that allows you to interrogate plant specimen information held in the major Australian herbarium. It provides immediate access to the wealth of data associated with these scientific collections. Six million specimen records, of particular value in displaying geographic distribution (to produce distribution maps in real time), will be enhanced by images, descriptive text and identification tools. To access the AVH visit the Council of Heads of Australian Herbaria website and then select any AVH node (best to choose the node closest to where you live).

Environment Australia

This site provides a diverse range of information (conduct a search from the home page).

Caribbean Natural History Links

Links to natural history organisations, databases, etc for the Caribbean, provided through the Caribbean Journal of Science website.

Caribbean Site Directory

An organised index for use by anyone searching for Caribbean related web-sites.

Agriculture, Agroforestry and Forestry

Desmanthus

An evaluation of tropical pasture legumes on gidgee soils in the semi-arid tropics by C. Gardner. This paper includes an assessment of Desmanthus (plus Clitoria, Macroptilium and Stylosanthes) as tropical pastures for Gidgee (Acacia cambagei) land in northern Queensland, Australia.

FACT Net

An international network of community groups, development workers, tree breeders, researchers, students, and farmers of 2,000 partners in 100 countries with a shared interest in the use of multipurpose trees to improve the soil, protect the environment, and enhance the well-being of farm families and other land users. FACT Net closed in 1999 but Winrock International’s Forestry and Natural Resource Management Program maintains the web site.

Rural Industries Research & Development Corporation (Australia)

Conduct a search on this site to obtain reports and other documents relating to legumes (and other plants) which may have some commercial prospect.

International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO)

The Working Party 2.08.02 of IUFRO is interested in research on nitrogen-fixing genera, particularly those that are suitable for soil stabilization, wind protection, for use on poor soils, wetlands and in dry regions of the world. Research interests include the biology of nitrogen fixation and optimization of growth and adaptability utilizing this property in domesticated species. Many species are multipurpose and important for farm forestry, agroforestry, pulpwood, firewood and charcoal and other products such as fodder for animals. Improvement strategies include propagation strategies, selection for pest resistance, disease resistance, and multiple traits, combined with appropriate silvicultural methods. Among its activities is the publication of newsletter NFT News — Improvement and Culture of Nitrogen Fixing Trees, providing pdf downloads of published papers.
