Acacia rhodoxylon Maiden, J. & Proc. Roy. Soc. New South Wales 53: 223; pl. 16, figs 5–12 (1920)

Rosewood , Ringy Rosewood

Tree 6–20 m high. Bark peeling in small curved flakes similar to ‘Minni Ritchi’ species. Branchlets glabrous, resinous. Phyllodes narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate, commonly inaequilateral with a straight lower margin and convex upper margin, sometimes shallowly falcate, 6–10 cm long, 8–20 mm wide, coriaceous, glabrous, resinous when young, with numerous indistinct, close, non-anastomosing nerves, of which 3–5 slightly more prominent. Inflorescences simple, 1 or 2 at base of rudimentary axillary shoot; peduncles 8–20 mm long, glabrous; spikes 2–3 cm long. Flowers 5-merous; sepals united into a truncate calyx. Pods narrowly oblong, 3–7 cm long, 5–9 mm wide, thinly coriaceous-crustaceous, glabrous, slightly resinous. Seeds longitudinal to oblique, widely elliptic, 3.5–4.5 mm long, shiny, brown; aril small.

Occurs in coastal and subcoastal parts of central Qld, from near Eidsvold N to SE of Mount Garnett. Grows in woodland, eucalypt woodland or eucalypt forest.

The extreme range of variation in phyllode shape and size, and in pod dimensions, could be related to the age of the plant.

Hybridises with A. shirleyi in places in east-central Qld, e.g. 125 km SSE of Charters Towers, R.J.Cumming 11579 (PERTH).
