Acacia rubricola Pedley, Austrobaileya 5(2): 309 (1999)
Heavily foliaged, much branched shrubs to 2 m high; branchlets ribbed, with phyllodes borne on projections of ribs, resinous, hispidulous with stiff straight hairs 0.1–0.2 mm long. Phyllodes linear, 20–43 mm long, 1–1.8 (–2.1) mm wide, straight or slightly sigmoid, flat, a single translucent yellow longitudinal nerve prominent on each face, with additional obscure longitudinal folds when dry, marginal nerves irregularly sparsely tuberculate, resinous, sparsely hairy at and near base when young; pulvinus c. 1 mm long. Inflorescences simple; heads globular, 20–35-flowered; peduncles 6–8 mm long, resinous, basal bract absent. Flowers 5-merous; calyx gamosepalous, dissected to c. the middle. Pods linear, raised over seeds, to c. 40 mm long, 2.5 mm wide, rather chartaceous, dark brown. Seeds longitudinal, 3.7–4.5 mm long, 1.6–2 mm wide; aril cream.
Restricted to the Binjour Plateau near Gayndah, Qld, where it occurs on red loamy soil in eucalypt open-forest or in heath.
Acacia rubricola is a member of the ‘ A. johnsonii group’. It is closely related to A. johnsonii and duplicates have been distributed under that name. It differs however in having longer, less pubescent, somewhat resinous phyllodes with quite conspicuous yellow translucent midnerves and branchlets with shorter hairs, and narrower pods.
