Acacia hystrix Maslin, Nuytsia 12: 353–354 (1999)

Rounded or obconic, dense shrub normally 0.3–1 m high. Branchlets glabrous. Stipules normally caducous, inconspicuous. Phyllodes sometimes continuous with branchlet but not forming cauline wings, erect, pentagonal in section, 2–6 cm long, 1–1.7 mm diam., pungent, rigid, glabrous, glaucous to subglaucous between the 5 prominent, yellow or yellow-green, vernicose nerves. Inflorescences simple, 2 per axil; peduncles 5–15 mm long, glabrous; basal bract persistent or caducous; heads globular, 10–13-flowered, bright light golden; bracteoles variably villous with glistening hairs. Flowers 5-merous; sepals free. Pods oblong to narrowly oblong, to 2.5 cm long, 3–5 mm wide, firmly chartaceous to thinly coriaceous, declinate, glabrous. Seeds longitudinal to oblique, oblong-elliptic to oblong-obovate, 2.2–2.7 mm long, somewhat glossy, brown; aril 1/2 to fully length of seed.

Occurs from Kulin E to near L. Gilmore, south-western W.A.

Possibly related to A. tetanophylla which differs by having 7-nerved phyllodes and pods which are not declinate. Two subspecies are recognised.

Phyllodes articulate at junction with branchlet; pulvinus yellowish orange and dilated at base

subsp. hystrix

Phyllodes continuous with branchlet; pulvinus absent

subsp. continua

Occurs from Kulin E to the Bremer Ra. (c. 165 km due E of Hyden), extending N to near Southern Cross. Grows in a variety of habitats but commonly in sandy loam or clay, in open scrub or open low woodland.
